Assessing Generative AI’s Impact on the Entertainment Industries

THE CHALLENGE

The entertainment sector is in a period of significant uncertainty, where the nature of work is rapidly — and in many cases, profoundly — changing at an unprecedented rate due to the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies. These technologies are poised to upend labor markets, particularly within the film, television, animation, music, and gaming industries. Yet it is not clear how GenAI will impact various job roles, workforce diversity, and economic mobility or what strategies should be put in place to protect/enhance job quality and career pathways.

OUR APPROACH

CVL Economics was engaged to conduct an in-depth analysis of the early impacts of GenAI on the creative industries. At the core of this project was the design and dissemination of a survey among 300 senior-executive leaders across 6 U.S. entertainment industries. Key topic areas included the anticipated role of GenAI, its effects on tasks and responsibilities, and the creation and/or replacement of job roles and titles. We then conducted a comprehensive analysis using both quantitative and qualitative methods to identify trends, patterns, and key insights that could inform measures to minimize the adverse effects of widespread GenAI adoption.
