Fostering Sustainable Development

THE CHALLENGE

Monterey County, located along California’s Central Coast, is known for its scenic vistas, fertile agricultural lands, and tourism destinations. It is also a region that is navigating significant economic development challenges in the face of rising housing costs, increasing regional competitiveness, and more frequent and intense environmental hazards. To ensure the long-term viability of its economy, Monterey County needs to build on its 2021 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) by identifying ways to diversify its industry base while also leveraging its historical strengths in novel ways.

OUR APPROACH

CVL Economics, in partnership with Grow America, was engaged by Monterey County to update the CEDS on an annual basis. Our approach is rooted in a thorough analysis of the county’s economic conditions, emerging trends, and future growth forecasts. This work involved detailed data analysis at both regional and sub-regional levels, focusing on key industries, labor markets, and demographic shifts. The initial update explored Monterey County’s recovery from the pandemic with an emphasis on housing metrics and small business environment indicators. Subsequent reports focused on the state of the County’s technology and innovation ecosystem as an engine for growth and highlighted policy priorities to encourage entrepreneurial development.
